Witnesses in the Afghan capital, Kabul, say several suicide bombers disguised as doctors and staff have stormed Afghanistan’s largest military hospital in the city.
Witnesses told reporters a suicide bomber blew himself up at the main gate of the 400-bed Sardar Daud Khan hospital in a central part of the capital early Wednesday, allowing several other assailants to enter the facility.
Afghan security forces and counterterrorism units quickly reached the site. Local television reports say the sounds of gunfire and explosions could be heard from within the building a gunfight is currently underway.
So far, there have been no claims of responsibility for the attack.
The latest violence comes just one week after more than a dozen people were killed in simultaneous insurgent attacks on security compounds in Kabul.
